My inspiration for this work came from the powerful women of the Harlem Renaissance who transformed jazz through their voices, presence, and emotional storytelling. I imagined the jazz singer holding a large metal microphone, dressed in the elegance of the era, while singing songs filled with love, longing, and sorrow.

I use a simplified Cubist approach to break the figure, microphone, and surrounding forms into overlapping geometric shapes. The fragmentation allows me to show the singer from multiple visual perspectives while creating the rhythm and movement I associate with jazz. Bold lines, contrasting shapes, and touches of color become visual notes within the composition.

Rather than simply portraying a singer, I wanted to capture the emotional presence of a woman immersed in her music—her voice, her story, and the atmosphere surrounding her.
